Teen takes his green revolution online
Friday August 28 2009 - Brampton Guardian

A Brampton teenager is hoping the Web’s virtual world can help save the real planet from environmental decline.

Khalid Brammer-Blackman launched a Web site and blog this week to encourage environmental activism.

The Sandalwood Heights Secondary School student is using www.sakeofgreen.tk to raise awareness about environmental issues and offer tips and ways of reducing the personal carbon footprint each human leaves on the planet.

He is also posting environmental volunteer opportunities available for students looking to fulfil their mandatory 40 hours of community service needed to earn a high school graduation diploma.

“There’s lots of kids that volunteer in hospitals, which is good, but I would like a lot of kids to do a lot of environmental stuff to help the environment,” he said. “The green community is in danger right now and it seriously needs a lot of help. It needs a lot of kids to be aware of the things that are going on.”

The 17-year-old is focused on raising environmental awareness among teenagers and youth.

An online medium, in today’s world, is an ideal conduit for reaching young people in the local and global community, he concluded.

“I was always a person that didn’t really care about the environment,” Brammer-Blackman admitted.

Then several years ago he began to learn and discover more about the environmental harm taking place all over the world.

Classroom discussions, documentaries like An Inconvenient Truth and reading various books and articles opened the teenager’s eyes to an environmental crisis underway.

“I want people to do more volunteering,” he explained. “I want people to be more socially aware of things that are happening in the environment.”

Brammer-Blackman encourages visitors to the site to start-up environmental clubs at their schools or join school-based and community organizations. The site offers environment-friendly tips such as choosing a laptop computer because it uses less energy than a desktop computer.

Environmental Facts of the Day, like a “single dripping hot water tap can waste 221 gallons of water a month”, are intended to give readers the knowledge to make smart environmental choices and take action.

Friend Zohaib Ahmed was enlisted to design the Web site.

“We’re currently looking for sponsors to make it into a bigger site,” Brammer-Blackman noted.
