More officers for Peel
Feb. 20, 2005
- Brampton Guardian
Peel police received a cheque from the province for more than $2.5 million, half the cost of the 124 front-line police officers hired under the Community Policing Partnerships grant program.
The provincial government pays 50 per cent of the cost of the 1,000 officers hired across the province under the program. The program pays up to a maximum of $30,000 per year, with the remaining money coming from the municipalities.
"Community safety is a major priority of the McGuinty government," Brampton Centre MPP Linda Jeffrey said in a news release. "Ontario residents have the right not only to be safe, but also to feel safe in their communities. We are committed to giving police the tools necessary to do their job better and safer."
The cash will help Peel police increase visibility, do more traffic enforcement, school outreach programs and in the fight against street drugs and street crime, Jeffrey said.
The Liberal government has committed to helping municipalities hire another 1,000 officers in the next three years.
