City of Brampton - City of Brampton Warns Residents to Stay Safe Around Water
December 21st, 2006
- Brampton Guardian
Brampton Fire and Emergency Services and the City's Community Services Department are urging residents, particularly children, to stay off City lakes, ponds and storm water management areas.
"Storm water ponds are not meant for recreational use because of the unpredictable flow of water and water quality, said Steve Blaney, from Parks Operations for the City of Brampton. These ponds are not meant for skating or swimming."
To deter residents from using storm water management ponds, Blaney said the City of Brampton constructs vegetation buffers and posts signs warning residents of the potential danger. Parents are advised to speak to their children about the danger of playing in these areas. Concerns relating to operation, engineering and design of storm water management ponds should be directed the Citys Works and Transportation Department at 905-874-2500.
"Falling through the ice happens quickly and the results can be deadly," said Brampton Fire and Emergency Services Chief Terry Irwin. "Even the strongest swimmer can be overcome by hypothermia in a matter of seconds."
The City offers outdoor skating free of charge at the skating trail in Gage Park and the Brampton Civic Centre, weather permitting. If the weather is too warm for outdoor ice surfaces, the City has indoor public skating for a fee at the following arenas: Chris Gibson, Jim Archdekin, Earnscliffe, South Fletchers SportsPlex, Terry Miller, Greenbriar and Century Gardens.
For locations or more information on City skating programs, please visit the City of Bramptons website at www.brampton.ca or consult the Parks and Recreation brochure. For outdoor ice rink updates, people can call the Parks Service Centre at 905-874-2906.
