City's annual New Year's Eve bash has outgrown Gage Park
December 30th, 2006 - Brampton Guardian

Fireworks, marshmallow roasting, live music, skating and more await families at the City of Brampton's free New Year's Eve party in the downtown core.

The fun starts at 6 p.m. and wraps up at 12:30 a.m.

The annual event is twice as big as past years, and is no longer confined to just Gage Park. Activities will stretch along Main Street all the way to the Garden Square in front of the new Rose Theatre.

Canadian pop singer Brian Byrne is the headline late-evening entertainment (10:30 p.m. to midnight). The award-winning singer will perform on the main stage, which will be set up in the Garden Square in front of the new Rose Theatre. A large 14-foot by 20-foot projection screen will be set up in Gage Park, so those skating around the trail or roasting marshmallows will be able to see and hear all of the live entertainment.

Wide Mouth Mason will perform on stage between 8 and 8:50 p.m., and Carlos Morgan (9:15 p.m.), Melissa Bathory (7 p.m.) and Jack Grunsky (6 p.m.) will round out the six hours of live entertainment.

Free marshmallows and roasting sticks will be supplied for roasting over the four controlled bonfires in Gage Park.

For those without ice skates, they can be rented at The Shoe Clinic, 15 Main St. S., any time between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. Sunday.

Last year's New Year's Eve celebrations were held in Gage Park and approximately 15,000 enjoyed the festivities. City officials are expecting a larger crowd this year.

The fireworks displays will be set up on the highest rooftop of city hall, and they will be done in such a way that the view from Gage Park will be identical to the view from Garden Square, according to Jennie De Medicis, the city's special events coordinator.

The Brampton Downtown Business Association and Bell Canada are sponsors of the night.

On Main Street, renamed Circus Alley during the festivities, jugglers, fire-eaters and other street performers will entertain young and old.

Multiple parking lots and free bus service will make it easy to get to and from the downtown celebrations this year. There are 10 parking lots available for partygoers and all offer free parking.

Brampton Transit will be free throughout the city from 7:30 p.m. to approximately 3 a.m.- courtesy of the city and Bacardi Canada- on Routes 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 14, 15, 18, 52, 53, 77 (Route 8 to 1:30 a.m. only).

Brampton Transit will also provide five buses downtown to warm up in.
