Veterans are celebrating end of WWII

Local veterans will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War with a parade and memorial service beside Brampton City Hall Saturday morning and residents are invited to attend.
Veterans from Branch 15 and Branch 609 of the Royal Canadian Legion will parade from Branch 15 on Elizabeth Street South at 10:30 a.m., arriving at Memorial Square beside city hall for the 11 a.m. ceremony. After the ceremony, the veterans will return to Branch 15 for a celebration with friends and family.
"Thousands of Canadians have fought, and given their lives, for freedom and peace in World War II," said Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell in a news release. "I encourage all residents to attend this service in honour of the sacrifices and accomplishments of our veterans."
The parade will shut down several streets between 10:30 and 11 a.m.:
* Elizabeth Street South from Branch 15 to Queen Street West;
* Queen Street West from Elizabeth Street to Main Street South;
* Main Street South from Queen Street to Wellington Street;
* Wellington Street West from Main Street to Elizabeth Street.
