Public hearings on future of region
Thursday, May 5th
- Brampton Guardian
The provincial government has scheduled public hearings in Brampton tomorrow (Friday) on the controversial legislation to restructure regional council.
The hearings come just two days after Bill 186 passed second reading in the Ontario legislature. Third Reading and Royal Assent are the two steps left to make the legislation effective. Once in place for the 2006 municipal election the bill would increase council representation for Brampton by one councillor and Mississauga councillor by two. Area politicians fear that increased voting power would give Mississauga control of the decision-making process.
Following Second Reading, the legislature's Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs was appointed to hold these two public hearings. Brampton's hearing is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Select, 30 Peel Centre Dr. (Dixie Road and Queen Street) in the Caledon Room West and the Centre Room.
Hearings in Mississauga are scheduled at 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Mississauga Convention Centre, 75 Derry Rd. W. in the Salon-C Room.
Residents interested in making comment can write to the Committee Clerk by noon Monday, May 9. Send submissions to Queen's Park, Room 1405, Whitney Block Toronto, Ontario, M7A 1A2.
An electronic version of Bill 186 is available on the Legislative Assembly Web site at www.ontla.on.ca.
